... Der Weg dahin war lang und reicht Jahre zurück. Immer wieder kam das Thema auf, immer wieder wurde diskutiert. Denn klar ist: Der Name ist Programm, trägt Geschichte(n)  und das „LSF“ flutscht doch so gut. Aber wer fühlt sich von dem Namen angesprochen – und wer nicht? Wen schließen wir damit ein – und wen aus? Mit diesen Fragen haben wir uns in diesem Jahr weiter beschäftigt und sind zu der Entscheidung gekommen, dass wir mit „Lesbisch“ und „Schwul“ nicht alle im Akronym LSBTIQ+ mitnehmen, die jedoch schon seit den Anfängen Teil des Festivals – und der Filme – sind. Wir möchten mit unserem Namen auch Menschen mit weiteren sexuellen Orientierungen und Geschlechtsidentitäten einladen.

Uns ist bewusst, wie politisch und stark die Begriffe „Lesbisch“ und „Schwul“ waren und auch heute noch sind – und wie wichtig es ist, lesbische Sichtbarkeit zu zeigen, indem das Wort zuerst genannt wird. „Lesbisch“ und „Schwul“ werden sich weiterhin in unserem Programm finden, das wir auch in Zukunft politisch, empowernd und auffordernd gestalten werden.

Genauso wie sich gesellschaftliche Debatten und Identitäten immer weiter bewegen, möchten wir uns mit der Namensänderung in einen Prozess begeben, statt stillzustehen. In Zukunft tragen wir das „Queer“ voran – als politischen und starken Begriff, mit dem wir mitnehmen und aufrütteln, einschließen und anecken, vergangenheitsbewusst und gegenwartsgewandt sind.

 

The Film Festival has a new name
After almost 32 years, we have changed our name. The Lesbisch Schwulen Filmtage Hamburg is now called the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival, which has been part of the festival name since 2010. This renaming has a history going back many years. Again and again the topic came up, again and again it was discussed. The name LSF – as the festival is often called – rolls from the tongue, evokes his/herstory, it says it all. But does it? Who is addressed by this name? And who is not? Who does it include, and who does it exclude?

This year we have continued to deal with these questions and have come to the conclusion that with "lesbian" and "gay" we do not include everyone in the acronym LGBTIQ+ although they have been part of the festival – and the films – since the beginning. We would like the name of the festival to be at the forefront when inviting people with other sexual orientations and gender identities to take part.

We are aware of how political and powerful the terms "lesbian" and "gay" have been and still are. Also how important it is to promote lesbian visibility by naming the word first in the name Lesbisch Schwulen Filmtage Hamburg. "Lesbian" and "gay" will continue to be found in our programme, which we will continue to make political, empowering and challenging.

Just as societal debates and identities are constantly on the move, by renaming the festival we want to actively engage in a process of change, instead of standing still. "Queer" will be our focus in the future – a strong, political term, which will be accepted and will agitate, be inclusive but disturbing, a term that brings with it an awareness of the past and is in tune with the present.
